Pastor E. A. Adeboye donates house to parents of quadruplets

One of the most exciting testimonies of the just concluded 64th national convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, which began on August 1 and ended on August 7, 2016 was the delivery of a set of quadruplets. Mrs. Nkechi Uche was delivered of the three boys and one girl through Caveserian session at the Redeemer’s Health Centre, Redemption Camp.

It was learnt that the wife of the General Overseer of the church, Pastor (Mrs.) Foluke Adeboye, is supporting the Uche family which now has four boys and three girls to cater for.

Contrary to claims about the state of health of the babies, the source stressed that Mrs. Uche as well as the three boys and one girl are strong and bouncing. Amongst other things, Pastor (Mrs) Adeboye, he said, has donated a two-bedroom flat to the family in one of the estates within the Redemption Camp while frantic efforts are on-going to secure a new job for the children’s father.

“The first family of the”, RCCG believes that children are gifts from the Lord; they are rewards from Him. Happy therefore is the man whose quiver is full of them for he will not be put to shame”, the source said.

Can we have a peep into your background?
My name is Aliyu Sabiu Ibrahim. I was born in Muduru village, Mani Local Government Area of Katsina State on January 5, 1983. I had my primary education at Muduru Model Primary School from 1988 to 1994 and then proceeded to the Usman Dangogo College of Arabic and Islamic studies, popularly called Arabic Teacher’s College. I learnt English and Arabic Languages and interestingly I memorized the whole Quran in SS1. I participated in the Quranic Competition representing Katsina and Nigeria.

What are the institutions you have attended?
I attended Hassan Usman Polytechnic where I obtained a Diploma in Sharia from 2003 to 2006. I got an admission into a Malaysian University, Al-Madinah International University where I studied Computer and Information Technology for my first degree. I took up a part-time job in the office of the Dean of Admission and Registration where I served as a Personal Assistant. The university saw potential in me so they gave me the opportunity to work. I graduated with upper credit.

We learnt you taught in primary school before your sojourn to Malaysia?
Yes, It was after my polytechnic education that I became a class room teacher under the Primary Education Board and I taught for three years from 2006 to 2009 in my local government. It may interest you to note that I have developed interest in imparting knowledge that I initiated an Islamic school in my village called Ta’afizul Qur’an L’arabiya in 2002 and now has over 300 students.

How did you venture into politics?
I actually started my masters in the same university when I came to Nigeria on holiday not knowing I will be dragged into politics. Elders and members of my constituency advised me to join politics but I was reluctant. But when the pressure became too much, I finally succumb. I contested under the best party, All Progressives Congress APC alongside five others in the primaries and I won.
Then I contested with other opposition parties, especially PDP, APGA and others in my local government. My local government is one of the oldest in Katsina state since Katsina was under the old Kaduna. I won with the will of Almighty Allah with over 12,000 votes over that of the candidate of the then ruling party.

How did you eventually become the speaker of the Assembly in the midst of other elderly legislators?
In fact, to be sincere, for various reason and the fact that I was relatively young, I refused to contest for the post of speakership. Surprising, some of my distinguished colleagues asked me to contest for the position. I was also reluctant but after due consultations with elders and friends, especially the youths, I humbly accepted the nomination and contested with five honourable members.
Some of them willingly stood down for me. On the day of the election for the speaker, I contested with one person and won with 28 of 36 votes on the 9th of June 2015.

Some might suspect you were influenced or selected by the power-that-be like in other states where governors select their speakers?
Well it could happen in other states. In my own case I was elected by my distinguished colleagues even some previous administrations in the state, governors selected people for the post. My governor was a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, so he never interferes; he always wants people to learn by example so they can lead by examples.

As a young leader how do you relate with your colleagues?
We are all cooperating peacefully. In my first speech as a speaker I asked for their cooperation, telling them I cannot do it alone. We need to work as a team to develop our state. Being a speaker doesn’t mean I can do it alone. People call me “Dan-Auta”, meaning Last Born in the assembly. I do seek advice from returning members in the house because I know I am not perfect.
Our legislative house is the most vibrant in Nigeria. I challenge other states. We never pass bills without consultations. We engage so many people, we call for public hearing before passing bills so Katsina people understand the law we are passing.

What are your plans for youth in the state?
The Nigerian youths are always looking up to some of us that could be tagged the youthful politician and office holders. I am glad to represent the youth and must exhibit sterling leadership qualities exemplifying youths’ embodiment. APC mixes elders with youths.
I will continue to ensure youth empowerment programme succeed in the state and also encourage their active participation in politics by making sure leadership are accountable. The legislature will also ensure any law that will protect their right is strengthened.

Katsina state just bought goats for women empowerment and some have ridiculed the government for this. What is your take?
Some people misunderstood the idea behind the purchase of the goats for women empowerment. The goats were bought to encourage husbandry rather than just giving them money for any business. With focus on diversification of the economy to agriculture, even on low scale can boost their purchasing power.
The beneficiaries were giving male and female goats for reproduction and mass production. You should know that rural women will take care of the goat they will never go and sell it, and it will be useful to them.

Is that the idea behind the rumoured goat purchase?
That is the idea, but some people outside might not understand our peculiarity; we bought those goats to cater for these type of women and keep them busy. The last administration helped literate women in Katsina Central so we want people to know they voted for change; I grew up in the village where I used to buy sheep while I was in secondary school; I would then give to my brothers and cousins who would rear them for me and when anyone delivers, they take one, next year I take one and that was how we used to do it.
I repeat, all women must benefit from democracy, our allocations and revenue are meant for all Katsina citizens not certain groups, not for the governor or legislators.
Before giving out the goats, the state empowered so many youths, we obtained about N2 billion loan from the central bank. We gave out N20, 000 and N10,000 to youths.
When you do something new you face challenges, since people have not been doing that before, our government is on the table not under the table so we face a lot of challenges.

Can you tell us about the state’s 2016 budget?
The Katsina state budget comprises five sectors. Education, Health, Water Resources, Agriculture and Youth empowerment/Human Development. We did a diligent defense exercise that was meticulously scrutinized and every item was considered for its merit and appropriateness. In fact some institutions commended our efforts in that regard.

You talked about doing your masters before coming for holiday then politics, do you plan to further your education?
I love reading, if I have the opportunity to continue I will. I am presently pursuing my masters at Ahmadu Bello University under the Faculty of Social Sciences, International Relations to be specific. I am currently working on my thesis.

What is your advice to your fellow Nigerian youths?
They should always do the right things. They should avoid drugs they should go to school; education has many benefits. They should join politics to move the nation forward not buy and display flashy cars, mansions and move around with motley of girlfriends.
During my campaign I never met anybody older than 45 unless you were in the party. I never consulted people older than 45. I was with the youths, my major constituency. My advice once again, work hard and complain less.

Can you talk about your passion for agriculture?
It is the area I really love. I own a very big farmland about 20 hectares for maize, 14 hectares for rice. I am happy to remain a farmer because you get many things. As a youth, if you are thinking only about what to eat or wear then you are in trouble that’s why I said youths should work hard and complain less.
If I tell you about my experience in school abroad, you will be surprised. I led prayers and the rich people dashed me money. I have rich friends but I don’t care because I believe one day it is going to get better.

I learn you have many Arab friends. How do you intend to bring their influence to bear on the Nigerian economy?
Yes there are many Arab and Arab-speaking foreigners in my university in Malaysia. The VC loves me. He took me as a son and he is from a royal family. I also have a good relationship with the son of the King of Saudi Arabia. They love me because I understand their language. We communicate very well. I hope I will be able to persuade some of them to invest in Katsina if not in Nigeria.

Scientists back to earth after 1 year on Mars trial

An international group of scientists emerged on Sunday after a year of near isolation in a research station set up in Hawaii to simulate conditions on Mars.

Greeted with a cry of "welcome back to earth," the six scientists - three men and three women - emerged from a small white dome on Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcano, which has a landscape resembling the one found on Mars.
The dome sits at an elevation of 2500 metres above sea level where no plants grow, and the six scientists who participated in the experiment were only allowed to leave the dome if they were wearing a space suit.
Part of a long-term goal to send humans to Mars, the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS) experiment was designed to explore whether a crew could live together in close quarters over an extended period of time and under adverse conditions.
"Bring something you can work on," German scientist Christiane Heinicke said after her year-long stay atop the volcano.
"One of your biggest enemies is boredom," she said. "You have to be willing and able to adapt to the others and make compromises."
Each scientist worked on research projects during their stay and learned how to get by with limited resources while avoiding personal conflicts within the confines of the dome.
Communications with the outside world were delayed by 20 minutes, the same amount of time it would take to relay messages to and from Mars.
Putting three men and three women in a small dome for a year might sound like a crude Big Brother experiment, but it was expected to provide valuable knowledge for space research.
If the dream of many space-faring countries of sending humans to the Red Planet becomes reality, the trip alone would take up to a year.
Another hurdle is co-operation among the crew while they live on Earth's neighbouring planet, which on average is 228 million kilometres away.
They must be able to endure an inhospitable environment until the planets align favourably for the return trip.
The group became the first to complete a year-long Mars simulation in the United States.
Kim Binsted, principal investigator for the HI-SEAS, told the Hawaii Tribune Herald newspaper that the only longer Mars simulation was held in Russia and lasted 520 days.

Against the background of arguably the worst economic hardship in Nigeria ever, evident in high cost of living and unprecedented human suffering in the country, insinuations of another increase in petrol products prices are not only depressing, they are insulting.  The mere thought smacks of gross insensitivity and callousness on the part of those contemplating it.

Nigerians will, therefore, have no choice but to resist any such cruel attempt at fuel price increase and further aggravation of their pains as any such plan can only be the product of poor judgment based on jaundiced reflections. It must, afterall, be acknowledged by the leaders that no amount of price increases will solve the country’s mounting economic problems as previous increases never solved any but only compounded the suffering of Nigerians.

Those at the helm of affairs will do well to look into the corruption in the fuel supply system and put an end to it.

The Buhari’s administration, barely three months ago, increased the pump price of petrol from N86.50 to N145, the highest ever. This, it was believed was the final act of removing the phantom subsidy on petroleum products.
Unfortunately, now, at a time when palliatives are needed to cushion the effects of the current severe economic hardship, a new price of N151.87/litre is reportedly being canvassed by marketers.

According to them, with the ex-depot price of petrol at N133.28/litre and a selling price of N145/litre, the difference of N12 is not enough to cover their distribution cost of N18.71, hence, their arrival at a N151.87/litre proposed price.

The specifics of this “distribution margin” for every litre of petrol according to the marketers, include retailers charge, N6; transporters’ allowance, N3.36; bridging fund, N6.2; dealers’ charge, N2.36; marine transport average, N0.15; and admin charge, N0.3. This, to say the least, is outrageous!

First, if an additional cost of N18.71 is indeed required for the marketers to break even, why are some marketers currently selling at N140 per litre instead of the maximum N145 approved by the government? Even the most elementary interest in the fuel supply system has shown how opaque and corrupt it is. Why, on earth, has successive governments in Nigeria failed to deal with this massive corruption in this sector in which a few have fed fat while the nation bleeds?

The details above of course, expose the unpatriotic manipulations by players in the fuel importation and distribution business, which more or less determine the price of petrol. Adding a myriad of charges to the actual cost of petrol by different interest groups is tantamount to fleecing Nigerians. And this should not continue.

Perhaps, the only charge that can be justified is the administrative charge of 3 kobo. All other charges are borne out of corruption, which, unfortunately, are passed on to ordinary Nigerians.

How, for instance, could the N3.36 paid as transporters’ allowance be explained? Is the money meant for the transport owners or the drivers? How come there are transport charges when the tanker owners are paid for the job of fuel distribution?

The same question hangs on dealers’ charge of N2.36. Indeed, there are too many questions! And no one is giving any answers.

While experts say in matters concerning oil pricing, politics overrides economics, definitely, in better-run societies, the N18.71 extra cost on every litre of fuel would have come under the scrutiny of the government of the day. So it is important to ask on what basis the Nigerian government would approve the numerous proposed charges even in the face of its own war against corruption?

In India, for instance, the final price of fuel is determined by three approved components, namely, commission to petrol pump owner, excise duty and value added tax, on gross price including excise, which are charged minimally.

In the case of Nigeria, the six components that have bloated the fuel price apparently go into private pockets. There is no mention of VAT or any other tax, which should accrue to government. Matters like this should therefore engage the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari which should effect changes in line with the anti-corruption crusade of his administration.

Nigeria is a nation which gets its priorities wrong all the time and where the leadership daily short-changes the people. For the purpose of any argument, even if any subsidy remains on petroleum products and if the Nigerian government could subsidise foreign exchange for pilgrims, it should also be prepared to subsidise Nigerians to the extent of a life worth living. The Buhari’s administration should therefore avoid plunging the country into needless crises that could result from any further fuel price increase.

Dangote rice set to hit market stalls soon.

Nigerians’ challenges with the purchase of rice may soon become a thing of the past as Dangote Rice is set to hit the market stalls.

According to The Nation News, the management of the rice-producing company has commenced the harvest of its first tranche and Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest billionaire, is said to be very happy with the latest development.

Sources within the organisation informed the business mogul has expressed satisfaction with the recent development more because it will help ease the pains of Nigerians, who are presently groaning over the N20, 000 per bag cost of the commodity.
Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, is said to be very excited about this new development.
The source said: “We are really excited about the progress so far recorded in this our rice projects. Once we commence the sales of our rice, I can authoritatively tell you that the price of rice will crash in the country as we should have enough, in the next few years to make importation of rice non-attractive again into the country.”
Recall that Dangote inaugurated its 8,000-hectare rice out-growers’ scheme in Hadejia, Jigawa state early this year, when he distributed rice seedlings to farmers.
The scheme is said to help reduce the level of Nigeria’s imports and potentially provide direct and indirect jobs to about 10, 000 Nigerians.
Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) also recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) to invest $1billion (N165 million) on establishment of fully integrated rice production and processing operations across Nigeria.

Farmland in Edo, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kwara, and Niger states totalling 150,000 hectares have been penciled down for the commercial production of rice paddy.
Meanwhile, Ganiyu Quadri, the chairman, Alimosho local government in Lagos state has revealed that the price of a bag of rice, which is currently sold for N18,500, will drop to N9000 before December.
Speaking after receiving a delegation of Rotary Club of Akowonjo 9110, led by by its district-governor, Patrick Ikheloa, and president, Shola Abidakun, Quadri gave assurance that the agro-business scheme run by the Lagos state government in Kebbi state will put an end to the high cost of foodstuff in the southwest.

“…It’s a gang-up against Christianity” –World Pastors group reacts"
A Christian group covering a network of pastors and general overseers has alerted members of the public on the latest system opponents of Christianity have devised to persecute evangelical Christian pastors in Nigeria.
According to the group called, Sons Of the Prophet Network (SOPN) comprising about 4,500 General Overseers of various ministries in more than 20 African countries, Europe, Canada and America, the call for vigilance became necessary in the light of a recent attack on one of the most popular churches of Christ in Nigeria, Omega Fire Ministries (OFM) headed by Apostle (Dr.) Johnson Suleman.
The statement by SOPN reads thus: “A certain lady who goes by a funny name, Honey Phoenix Evarist, has been on the internet spreading unholy and sadistic accounts about OFM. And this, the group said, is viewed as a part of the grand plot against not just the church but the personality of the head of OFM, Apostle Johnson Suleman, who has been consistent in his frank but honest outburst against attacks on the Church of God and Christianity.
One of the reasons that spurred the SOPN into reacting is the fact that the lady claimed in her story that she is a staff of the Africa Independent Television (AIT).
After a painstaking check with AIT offices across Nigeria including the Abuja headquarters, it was discovered that no member of staff of the TV house bears Honey Phoenix Evarist. Besides, it became clear that the name could just be a hoax in order to hide the real identity of the enemy.
We view this new trend as a part of the grand plot by certain Muslim cabal against the person of Apostle Johnson Suleman who is seen as the major frontline against the perceived agenda of certain quarter in the county to Islamize Nigeria, based on the finding by reliable informants that this lady, of Igbo extraction, was recently prodded to convert to Islam by her new boyfriend called Umar.”
Meanwhile, the group declared in the statement that, no matter the plot against Apostle Suleman and the Church of God, all attempts to discredit him, his ministry and Christianity as a whole, would be unsuccessful “as it is seen as part of the ongoing plots to eliminate Christian voices in Nigeria and a plot to tarnish Apostle Suleman’s hard-earned reputation and rising profile in recent times.”
“This year alone,” the group added, “Apostle Johnson Suleman has had crusades in 32 countries, a towering achievement yet to be rivaled in Christendom.”

DeltaState was carved out of the former Bendel State on August 27th 1991 . The state was created following agitations for the creation of separate distinct states by the Urhobos and Anioma regions. The then Military President, Gen Ibrahim Babangida (Rtd) created the state using the name "Delta" advanced by Niger Delta region as "Asaba" another name advanced by the people of Anioma for the capital of the proposed "Anioma state." Delta state was once integrated in the Mid Western state from 1963 to 1976 and later Bendel state, from 1976 to 1991. The name "Bendel" (Ben-Del) meant Benin-Delta to reflect the integration of Benin and Delta provinces.

Delta is an oil producing state of Nigeria situated in the region known as the Niger Delta, South-South Geo-political zone with a population of 4,098,291 (Males: 2,674,306 Females: 2,024,085 (see Federal Republic of Nigeria, Official gazette, No. 24, vol. 94, 2007.) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the former Federal Minister of Finance and World Bank Managing Director is from this state. The capital city is Asaba located at the northern end of the state with an estimated area of 762 km2,while Warri is economic nerve of the state and also the most populated located in the southern end of the state. The state has a total land area of 16,842 km2.

Historical Development: The area called Delta State was once an integral part of the old Western Region of Nigeria. It became an autonomous entity on August 27, 1991 after having been part of the old Midwestern State (1963 1976) and the defunct Bendel State (1976 1991).

Delta State started with twelve local government areas. These were split further into nineteen local governments on September 27, 1991, and to twentyfive LGAs in 1997. Asaba, located at the northern end of the state, is the capital. A master plan for Asaba Capital Territory, with an estimated area of 762 sq. km and designed to transform Asaba into a modern metrop olis, is being pursued by the state government.
Location: Delta State lies roughly between longitudes 5°00 and 6°45'E and latitudes 5°00 and 6°30'N. It has a total land area of 16,842 sq. km. The states bordering Delta State are Edo to the north, Ondo to the northwest, Anambra to the east and Bayelsa and Rivers to the southeast. On its southern flank is 160 km of the coastline of the Bight of Benin.
Administrative Areas: Delta State currently has twentyfive local government areas. They are: Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Bomadi, Burutu, Ethiope East, Ethiope West, lka NorthEast, lka South, Isoko North, Isoko South, Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West Okpe, Oshimili North Oshimili South, Patani, Sapele, Udu, Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Ukwani, Uvwie, Warri North, Warri South and Warri SouthWest.
Administrative Structure: Delta State runs a twotier system of government namely; the state government and the local government administration.
The State Government: There are three arms of government which include the executive council, the legislature and the judiciary. The executive council comprises the Governor, Deputy Governor, seven commissioners, special advisers and the secretary to the state government. The commissioners head the ministries while the directorates and parastatals are organs in the office of the governor and deputy governor, respectively.
The special advisers are assigned responsibilities usually in the following areas: information, paras tatals, education, health, commerce and industry. The Delta State House of Assembly is the leg islative or lawmaking arm of the government. Currently, the membership of the State House of Assembly is fifty.
The Chief Judge of the state heads the state's judiciary. The judiciary is organised around a sys tem of courts, which are of three different kinds namely the High Court, the Magistrates' Court and the Customary Court. There is also a Customary Court of Appeal to hear appeal cases from the Customary Courts.
The Local Government: The second tier of government, is the local government administration. It consists of two arms of government in each of the local government administration. The first, the executive committee comprises the chairman of the local government, the deputy chairman, supervisors and secretary to the local government. The second, the legislative council is the lawmaking arm of the local government. The principal officers of the legislative council are; the speaker, deputy speaker, majority and minority leaders.
People & Culture
Delta State has an estimated population of about 4.2 million with Urhobo, Itesekiri, Ijaw (Izon), Isoko and Anioma (Igbo) as the main ethnic groups. These groups share ancestral and traditional administrative systems, evident in their dress, language, festivals, music and folklore. The people are hospitable, enlightened, resourceful and hardworking.

Weather/Climate
Delta State is situated in the tropics and therefore experiences a fluctuating climate, ranging from the humid tropical in the south, to the subhumid in the northeast. The lessening of humidity towards the north is accompanied by an increasingly marked dry season. The average rainfall is about 266.5mm in the coastal areas and 190.5mm in the extreme north. Rainfall is heaviest in July. Temperature increases from the south to the north. In Warri, located in the south for example, the average daily temperature is 30°C, while the temperature in Asaba in the north eastern area is 44°C.

Asaba Beach
The beauty of Delta State is held together by the dozens of rivers, streams and creeks which crisscross it. The majestic Niger, one of the most famous rivers of Africa, washes the shores of the capital city, Asaba. Further downstream, it breaks into the dozens of creeks through which it empties itself into the Atlantic. During the dry season, the golden sandbanks of the Niger are a sight to behold and ideal for relaxation.

River Ethiope Source
River Ethiope, reputed to be the deepest inland waterway in Africa, has its source at the foot of a giant silk-cotton tree at Umuaja in Ukwuani local government area and it then flows through seven Local Government Areas in the state. By the time it reaches Sapele, it has become deep enough to provide a harbour for ocean-going vessels.
Kwale Game Reserve
This reserve is situated in the low coastal zone of Delta State, characterized by rainforest vegetation and deltaic swamps. It is rich in reptiles and water associated animals, particularly red river hog, sitatunga and a variety of brackish, marine and freshwater fish species.
Jamieson River
A trip up the Jamieson River is a pleasant outing. If you cannot hire a boat it is possible to get to Jamieson River at Sapoda by car, where there is a pleasant picnic spot. The river up stream from Sapoba is beautifully clear and suitable for swimming, although the water is surprisingly very cold.
Chief Nana’s Palace Living History Museum, Koko
This is national monument also known as “koko palace” located at the port of Koko in Warri North, it is a monument that attracts thousands of tourists. It was the residence of Chief Nana Olomu Eborhimi of the Itsekiri tribe, who was a powerful nineteenth century indigenous entrepreneur.
Leisure Paradise Amusement Park, Ekpan
Located in Ekpan, Effurun, it’s a place to head for a family day off around Warri. With a newly built roller coaster, a flying elephant ride and waters slides, it’s great for kids. This is a national monument that happened to be the first headquarters of the Royal Niger Company and Nigeria’s first political headquarters in 1900.
Lander Brothers’ Anchorage, Asaba
It was built in memory of the Lander Brothers-Richard and John who anchored at about that spot of the River Niger during the expedition that they took over from Mungo Park. The erected anchorage is, however, not the original one but a replica; the original one is at Aboh. The Lander Brothers are credited with the discovery of the mouth of the River Niger. This led to the opening of the West African trade which eventually replaced slave trade. The anchorage has an information centre and a restaurant.
Expatriate Graveyard, Asaba
This is the resting place of missionaries and colonial workers that came to Asaba on a mission.
Bomadi Beach Party Resort
